How It Works

Overview

Studio400 is a unique product amongst home computer video editing systems. In the broadest terms it is categorised as a Linear editor, because of the way that it assembles the scenes on the output tape, one after the other, from source clips located on another machine. The order in which the source scenes are selected, and their location, is determined from a 'script file' known as an 'Edit Decision List' (EDL).

The EDL is a common feature of linear editors, but the way in which it is created is unique to Studio400, and is one of its greatest strengths. This introduces a complication in our classification of the system, because the EDL is generated using Non-Linear editing techniques.

This factor, plus the ability to produce AVI files from the low-res captured using purely the Non-Linear editing process, has earned it the classification of a 'Hybrid' system.

Source footage is captured on the hard-disk in its entirety, at low resolution - but sufficient to preview its content.
