Getting the best out of your VCR
by manually determining its delay characteristics can be a very time
consuming job. Using GDoc, and creating a calibration project is
something you normally only have to do once, but you can easily find
yourself going over and over the calculations as you make repetitive
calibration movies on your VCR.
The Glitch Doctor Assistant is an
Excel Workbook (group of spreadsheets) that takes all the hassle out of
this part of the process. You just enter the set of corrections you read
from your VCR, together with the delay values you used, and Zap! all the
hard work is done for you. The assistant will check your results for
obvious errors and problems, calculate new VCR delays, assess the
quality of your VCR and camcorder seek performance, then help you assess
your soundcard's behaviour.
If you thought spreadsheets were
boring rows and columns of numbers you may be surprised at the way The
Assistant works. Although the delay results are numerical, the
assessment information is compiled and presented to you in real live
text.
The Assistant performs all the
calculations and equipment assessments detailed in the GDoc User Guide,
so you have a good idea of what it is doing for you but, using the power
of the Excel statistical functions, the analysis is more thorough. It handles both the
basic Sound Glitch procedure and the more advanced Transition (Freeze
Frame) adjustment.
Even if you have never used Excel, or a
spreadsheet before, the process is simplicity itself. If you can use a
mouse, you can use the Assistant.
When you are happy with the
results, you can print out a copy of them for reference.
